your skin and your perfume

why it can smell different on you

same perfume, different wear.

a perfume can behave a little differently from one person to the next. paper gives a neutral first read, but skin plays its part, and scientists have begun to measure how.

skin is not glass.

in a 2025 study, scientists put the same scent mix on the forearms of 10 people, and on glass. most of the test molecules left skin more slowly than they left glass. a couple left faster.

what made the difference.

the mix left some people's skin faster than others'. well-hydrated skin tended to let it go more slowly, and rougher skin let the lighter molecules go faster. no single thing, like age or sex, explained it.

warmth and moving air.

warm skin makes the first notes leave faster. and scientists who model how perfume leaves the skin count skin temperature and the air moving over it.
